How can I get involved?
There are basically three ways you can get involved: Pray for us, worship with us and serve with us.
Where do you meet?
We meet at Kernodle Middle School located at 3600 Drawbridge Parkway in Greensboro, North Carolina. Worship is each Sunday from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. Visit our connect page for more information.
How is the church organized?
The church is organized simply, around the New Testament purposes of the church. Sojourn will be focused on three things: Encountering God, Equipping for Service, and Engaging our community. All this done in the context of community with Jesus at the center. We desire to be part of rediscovering and reactivating the missional church--that is a community of God's people that defines itself, and organizes its life around, the church's real purpose of being an agent of God's mission to the world.
What are the core beliefs of the church?
The short answer to what we believe is that we are first Christians, second Evangelicals and third Missional. The more lengthy answer is included below and intentionally omits some finer points of doctrine and secondary issues as to allow the future elders of our church to operate according to their convictions on these matters.
- First, we are Christians which distinguishes us from other world religions and cults. Therefore, we adhere to both the Apostles and Nicene Creeds.
- Second, we are Evangelicals and in agreement with the doctrinal statement of the National Association of Evangelicals:
- We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
- We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
- We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.
- We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
- We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
- We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Third, we are Missional:
- We believe that our local churches must be faithful to the content of unchanging Biblical doctrine (Jude 3).
- We believe that our local churches must be faithful to the continually changing context of the culture(s) in which they minister (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).
- We believe that our mission is to bring people into church so that they can be trained to go out into their culture as effective missionaries.
What is the style of worship?
In our style, we desire first and foremost to be biblical in our worship, recognizing that worship changes the worshiper into the image of the one worshiped. Our desire is that the atmosphere and dress be casual and the music contemporary.
Are you part of a denomination?
While we are not part of a denomination, we will continue to seek strategic partnerships and alliances with like-minded churches and ministries that will advance the purposes of God's kingdom.
What is your view of the church?
We believe that the local church is God's agent for redemptive change and that the church, which is the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons (Ephesians 1:22, 23; 5:25-27; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 2 Corinthians 11:2). We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures (Acts 14:27; 18:22; 20:17; 1 Timothy 3:1-3; Titus 1:5-11). We believe in the autonomy of the local churches, free of any external authority and control (Acts 13:1-4; 15:19-31; 20:28; Romans 16:1,4; 1 Corinthians 3:9, 16; 1 Corinthians 5:4-7, 13; 1 Peter 5:1-4). We recognize believer's baptism and the Lord's supper as scriptural means of testimony for the church (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 2:41, 42; Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
What type of leadership structure does the church have?
The church is led by a plurality of Elders that serve as such because they meet the biblical qualifications of an Elder and have demonstrated a deep love for the Lord Jesus. In addition, their walk should evidence a servant heart and passion for the things of God including those who are disconnected from a personal relationship with Him. We are praying for individuals that carry a vision in their heart of what it would means to see God's kingdom made visible in our city and world. We also believe that service is one of the most powerful catalysts to spiritual growth. We want to create a leadership culture that finds the very best leaders and then do everything we can to fuel their growth and work.
